Understanding Concussion: A Modern Approach to Recovery

Concussions are complex brain injuries that require more than just "waiting it out." Recent clinical evidence shows that a proactive, guided approach is the most effective way to return to normal life.

What is a Concussion?

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body that causes the brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can create chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretch and damage brain cells.

Common Symptoms

  • Physical: Persistent headaches, nausea, dizziness, and sensitivity to light or noise.
  • Cognitive: Feeling "foggy," difficulty concentrating, or slowed reaction times.
  • Emotional: Increased irritability, sadness, or anxiety.
  • Sleep: Drowsiness or difficulty falling asleep.

The Shift in Treatment

The old advice was to stay in a dark room until symptoms vanished. Today, we know that 24–48 hours of rest is sufficient, followed by sub-symptom threshold exercise. This involves engaging in light activity that doesn't significantly flare your symptoms to help the brain's metabolism recover.

Expert Tip

Avoid total sensory deprivation. Gradually reintroduce "screens" and light activity in small increments. If symptoms increase by more than 2 points on a scale of 10, take a break and dial it back.

Rehabilitation Strategies

  • Vestibular Therapy: Exercises to resolve dizziness and balance issues.
  • Oculomotor Training: Helping the eyes track and focus properly again.
  • Exertion Testing: Safely increasing heart rate to ensure readiness for sports or work.
  • Neck Treatment: Addressing cervical spine tension that often accompanies head impacts.

When to Seek Professional Help

If your symptoms persist beyond 10–14 days, you may be experiencing Post-Concussion Syndrome. Our team at The Rehab Nest provides comprehensive baseline testing and individualized recovery protocols to help you safely return to play and work.
